Jeff and Sheri Easter are one of Southern Gospel Music’s most beloved couples. In addition to singing, the two have also penned some of the most moving Southern Gospel lyrics.

Over and Over

The first single released to Southern Gospel radio from the latest Jeff and Sheri Easter album, “Life is Great and Getting Better” was “Over and Over”. This Southern Gospel song featured Jeff as the lead vocal. “I picked that out just sitting at my computer.” Jeff reflects. “It was on a list of songs from Brentwood and they didn’t even have the lyric sheet with it. It was a brand new song and they happened to have thrown it in at the end of the CD. Man I sat there and I just got cold chills. I’ve had my Mount Everest and I know that this will relate to a lot of people, that God is Faithful over and over again. Its just a very positive song.”

First Number One Southern Gospel Song

“Over and Over”, from Jeff and Sheri Easter’s “Life Is Great and Getting Better” album was their very first song to reach number one on the Singing News Southern Gospel Music Chart. When asked about this Jeff explains, “Its not necessarily the song’s fault, the DJ’s fault or the airplay. A lot of times it’s the radio promotion. Its like if you had a big concert going on and nobody knew about it nobody’s going to show up. So if you’ve got a great song like “Praise His Name” or “Roses Will Bloom Again” and the DJ’s don’t get it and or o one is promoting it and….I think what it boils down to, is it’s just like anything else, you have to promote a song.

So when we did this record – we own the record “Life Is Great and Getting Better”- we didn’t do it with a record company, we took a big chance and buddy when the first single came out we pulled out all the stops. In my opinion the greatest radio promoter is Rhonda Thompson. We also got Earl Galloway and their promotions company on it and Susan Whisnant helped out. We said we wanted to go for our first number one song with “Over and Over” from our first record and what’s cool about it is that it turned out to be Rhonda’s first number one with her new company, Rhonda Thompson Promotions. We were very excited. That was our goal and we got to see it happen.”

All Aboard The Jeff and Sheri Easter Bus

Jeff and Sheri Easter travel extensively both on their own and as part of the Gaither Homecoming tour. Jeff explained who travels with them. “Greg and Charlotte Ritchie. Greg had been with me 13 years and Charlotte 11. Their son Brandon who is four. Of course our kids, Madison who is 18, Morgan who is 13 and Maura Grace who is 20 months. Then we have Sheri’s cousin, Travis Lewis, who played upright bass for the Lewis family for 30 years. He’s our driver. And Melissa White who is our product person.”

Jeff proudly mentioned that his son, Madison, recently graduated from high school and is showing interest in music. He will be attending school to learn recording and has recently begun singing with the group and writing. “Sheri is very proud of his writing,” Jeff smiles. When asked if Madison has the “music gene” Jeff laughs, “He’s got it from both the Lewis family and the Easter Brothers and of course mom and dad!

Baby Maura Grace/ He Said, She Said…

They say that surprises come in little packages and that was the case when it was made public that Jeff and Sheri Easter were Site Build It!expecting a baby in October of 2005. When asked about this ….

He Said...

“True story. Sheri woke me up one night at 5:30 in the morning. She did one of them home tests and you know if that little pregnancy stick has two lines on it it means you are going to have a baby. I was asleep and she woke me up shakin’ me ‘It’s got two lines! It’s got two lines!’ and I didn’t know what she was talking about. So I reached over on my nightstand and got my bifocals – and I tell everybody – if you have to put your bifocals on to read a home pregnancy stick, you might be to old to have a baby.

I told this to Mark Lowry that, and that my arm wasn’t long enough and he started using that. Mark was one of the first guys we told about this because we knew if Mark knew about it everybody would know about it!”, Jeff laughed.

She Said…

“What was my reaction?!”, Sheri laughs, “I cried, I was shocked, I was afraid. I was ‘Oh my Gosh! What are we going to do!’. Honestly, it never dawned on me that after being married for 20 years that there could be a surprise – I just didn’t expect that. It was hysterical because we were scared to death and then in two hours we were laughing and we were overjoyed.”

Sheri paused for a moment then added, “I’m so thankful that God chose to do it this way because I wanted more children but we got so busy and time just slipped away. What a gift! What a gift!. She is this wonderful gift from God and I am just very blessed. Very thrilled.”

Going Away Party

One of my favorite Jeff and Sheri Easter songs is “Going Away Party”. This song won them a Dove Award. Jeff remembers, “Oh we loved that song when Bruce Haines wrote it with White River. We used to do a tour with the Mid South Boys, White River and Jeff and Sheri Easter. It was a Christian Country tour we did years ago. Bruce wrote the song and we just loved it.

“One day I was looking over some old songs and I looked at Sheri and said I would love to bring this song back. I’ll never forget. We were in Ireland and I played it to Bill Gaither. I wanted to get his feel on it because we were doing the Bill Gaither Homecoming Tour and I didn’t want to do anything where he might not agree on the lyrics. It is a touchy situation because death is a very, very serious thing and you know we miss our loved ones but forget about us and think about them in the presence of the Lord. A funeral service should be a going away party especially for those saints that have lived a full life, you know my grandparents, and it’s a celebration for them.

“Ninety-nine percent of the people get the message but you have one now and again that just don’t get it.”

Joshua, A Little Boy With a Big Heart

When I first listened to the latest Jeff and Sheri Easter album, “Life Is Great and Getting’ Better”, one song brought a tear to my eyes. The song is called Joshua. Sheri wrote it about one of her young fan’s battle with cancer. “I actually cried when I was writing it.”, remembers Sheri. “As a writer you put your heart into those lyrics."

"I had met Joshua and we had begun to pray for him. We talked with his family from time to time and they would show up at different concerts. He was just a precious little boy, your typical kid you know. Just beautiful big blue eyes. The first time that I met him he had lost all of his hair from chemo Learn Perfect Pitch Today - Online treatments. Its just very unfair and I don’t have any answers for children and cancer and I don’t pretend to be wise when it comes to issues like that. But I do know that God is faithful and life is hard. SO I just began to pray for this family and got acquainted with all of them.

“Joshua was six years old when he passed away. I got home one weekend and had a message on the answering machine from his family. I called his mother a couple of days later and she just told me the story of how she was sitting there holding Joshua…and for several weeks I could not get it off my mind. I looked at Jeff and said ‘this is going to be a song before its over. I know it will because I can’t get it off my mind. I read once that a writer has to put things down on paper so I guess that’s what I did. I put down how I felt on paper and then all of a sudden it dawned on me that Joshua in the Bible fought and he battled and this little buddy of ours, Joshua was a battler as well. When I saw the parallel I thought this is going to be a wonderful song.

“My greatest compliment”, Sheri smiles, “was before we even released the ‘Life is Great and Getting Better’ album, we called his parents and they came over with their other son and we listened to the song and they wept. Because of their tears I knew I was able to do it justice – because when you are handling somebody’s personal tragedy you want to handle it with an amount of sacredness that you feel obligated to write with.

"It was a wonderful experience because through this this family has used this song at the Relay For Life fundraiser in their hometown. A local newspaper also did an article on it and encouraged people to give featuring Joshua’s picture. A lot of good things come when we write our tragedies on paper. I’m very proud of this song.”

Over And Over

Lyrics and Music by B.Smith/S.Smith
New Spring/CCTB Music
Performed by Jeff and Sheri Easter
From the album, "Life is Great and Gettin Better"

I’ve stood on the bank of a wide raging river
Trusting that I’d get across
I’ve made my way through some valleys and deserts
Beleiving that I’d never get lost
I’ve been at the foot of what felt like Mt Everest
Knowing I’d have the strength for the climb
Cause through every trail, each test and temptation
One thing is sure every time

Chorus
Over and over again and again
God is faithful
Over and over, again and again
Through it all He’s made me able
To stand and survive
To come through alive
When it sure looked like I couldn’t win
Jesus is with me
So I claim the victory
Over and over again

Verse 2
If you ask me why I have no hesitation
God does what He says He will do
I’d simply say every battle has taught me
There’s nothing He won’t help me through
So why should I dwell on the hardships and struggles
When I look just beyond them I see
The way this will end is with great celebration
Deep in my heart I believe

Chorus
Over and over again and again
God is faithful
Over and over, again and again
Through it all He’s made me able
To stand and survive
To come through alive
When it sure looked like I couldn’t win
Jesus is with me
So I claim the victory
Over and over again

Livin’ In The Rain

Lyrics and Music by Twila Labar and Simon Hawkins
Bridge Building / Upright Grand Music/New Spring/Write About Jesus
Recorded by Jeff and Sheri Easter
From, “Life Is Great and Getting’ Better”

Chorus
I’ve been livin’ in the rain, child
I’ve been livin’ in the rain
Soaking up the blessings of the Good Lord
I’ve been livin’ in the rain
I don’t need to find a shelter
Don’t want the weather to change
All my days are better now
Since I’ve been livin’ in the rain

Verse 1
I wandered in the desert for many years
My soul was running dry
The sky grew heavy with a cloud of Grace
It came pouring like a river of grace

Chorus
I’ve been livin’ in the rain, child
I’ve been livin’ in the rain
Soaking up the blessings of the Good Lord
I’ve been livin’ in the rain
I don’t need to find a shelter
Don’t want the weather to change
All my days are better now
Since I’ve been livin’ in the rain

Verse 2
The rains have been falling since He saved my soul
The floodgates are open wide
All my sins are washed away
They went rolling with the rising tide

Chorus
I’ve been livin’ in the rain, child
I’ve been livin’ in the rain
Soaking up the blessings of the Good Lord
I’ve been livin’ in the rain
I don’t need to find a shelter
Don’t want the weather to change
All my days are better now
Since I’ve been livin’ in the rain

Verse 3
I’m gonna stay outside in the waterfall
There ain’t nothing to worry about
I’m gonna jump right in and get my bare feet wet
Cause His mercy keeps coming down

Joshua’s Song

Lyrics and Music by Sheri Easter
She Loved Music/2006/BMI
Recorded by Jeff and Sheri Easter
From, “Life Is Great and Getting’ Better”

Sheri Easter wrote this special song in memory of a brave little boy that touched her heart and was an inspiration to many, Joshua Lee Young (1999-2005). You can remember about Joshua by visiting www.caringbridge.org/sc/joshua

Remember Joshua led an awesome battle
Marched around the city seven times
The walls came down and gave him honor
Cause he knew all along that God would lead his fight

Chorus
Are you tired of fighting weary soldier?
Broadband Essentials by RealNetworks

Lay your weapon down and rest awhile
I know you’re tired and weary from your battle
So lay back in God’s arms and rest tonight

You’re beaten by the raging war inside you
You’re stumbling cause your steps are getting weak
Your head hangs low and though a tiny smile escapes you
In your eyes surrenders all I see

Her heart is breaking as she holds him tightly
This war won’t last much longer she can see
She knows the final surrender won’t come easy
So she prays for strength and softly whispers
“Now you’re free”

Chorus

I know you’re tired and weary from your battle
So lay back in God’s arms and rest tonight
So lay back in God’s arms and rest tonight

All The Days That End In Why

Lyrics and Music by Sheri Easter
She Loved Music/2006/BMI
Recorded by Jeff and Sheri Easter
From “Life Is Great and Getting’ Better”

She felt like Cinderella dressed in white
She wonders why she held onto her pride
“I’m sorry” doesn’t always take the pain
She wonders if she’ll ever get the chance to love again

Chorus
(Tell me why) Why do we have to hurt?
(Why) Why do we have to cry?
Why do we feel like we’re always asking why?
I pray for God to help me through the days that end in why.

Verse 2
He watches all his friends at little league
He’d rather be out playing with the team
But he knows he has some good days, some bad
And today’s he’s a little weak from the treatments he just had

Chorus
(Tell me why) Why do we have to hurt?
(Why) Why do we have to cry?
Why do we feel like we’re always asking why?
I pray for God to help me through the days that end in why.

Bridge
Why is my heart breakin?
Why do children cry?
Why do some “I love yous” end in goodbye?

Chorus
(Tell me why) Why do we have to hurt?
(Why) Why do we have to cry?
Why do we feel like we’re always asking why?
I pray for God to help me through the days that end in why.

Oh, tell me why, tell me why, why, why
Tell me why, tell me why
