"When He Was On The Cross" Timeless Truth Sung By The Florida Boys

"When He Was On The Cross", made famous by the Florida Boys,is one of Southern Gospel music most popular songs. Whether sung by the Florida Boys, Bill Gaither, or a local talent in their home church, this song continues to bless the listner (and the sing) after twenty years.

The Florida Boys are one of Southern Gospel Music’s most prolific and most loved groups. Formed in 1947, they have recorded over 100 albums. Not many groups in any style of music have recorded as many. The Florida Boys have already been inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and have appeared on many national television shows. The Florida Boys are a wonderful ambassador of Southern Gospel Music.

The current line up of the Florida Boys includes the heart of the group, Les Beasley, who sings lead. Les has been with the Florida Boys since 1953 and serves as the groups emcee as well.

There are very few people that have had more impact on Southern Gospel music then Les Beasley has. In addition to managing and singing with the Florida Boys for over 50 years, Les also pioneered Southern Gospel music on television. His program “Jubilee” was nationally televised and featured many of the top Southern Gospel groups of the time including the Rambos, the Statesmen, The Hinsons, The Cathedral Quartet, the Oak Ridge Boys, Wendy Bagwell and the Sunliters, JD Sumner and the Stamps and many others.

The current line up of the Florida Boys includes Glenn Allred who sings baritone and plays guitar. Derrell Stewart plays piano, Gene McDonald sings bass, Harold Reed is the tenor and Josh Garner also sings lead.

With several #1 songs, the Florida Boys have also recorded what may be one of the most moving and popular songs in Southern Gospel music, “When He Was On The Cross”.

“When He Was On The Cross” was written by Ronnie Hinson and Mike Payne and recorded by the Florida Boys in 1984. It was a number one song that year and remains a favorite today. Great music stands the test of time and this is a great song sung by a great group.

One of my favorite versions of this song can be found on”Terry & Jake” which features two of my favorite entertainers, Jake Hess and Terry Bradshaw (hey, I'm a Steelers fan!). Another great CD to find this song on is "Southern Gospel's Top 20: Songs of the Century, Vol. 2". This CD contains alot of wonderful classic SOuthern Gospel music.

Lyrics to “When He Was On The Cross”

by Ronnie Hinson and Mike Payne
performed by the Florida Boys

I’m not on an ego trip, I’m nothing on my own
I make mistakes I often slip, just common flesh and bones

But I'll prove someday, just why I say, I’m of a special kind
For when He was on the cross, I was on His mind.

For He knew me yet He loved me
He whose glory makes the heavens shine.
So unworthy of such mercy.
Yet when He was on the cross, I was on His mind.

The look of love was on His face and thorns were on His head
The blood was on His scarlet robe and stained a crimson red
Though His eyes were on the crowd that day,
He looked ahead in time
For when He was on the cross, I was on His mind.

For He knew me yet He loved me
He whose glory makes the heavens shine.
So unworthy of such mercy.
Yet when He was on the cross, I was on His mind.

Yet when He was on the cross, I was on His mind.
